Cultural Practice Framework

Implementation

The Ktunaxa Nation Social Investment’s Practice Framework implementation continues to gain momentum, and is regarded as an integral part of defining cultural safety within ʔamakʔis Ktunaxa.

Utilizing the orientation manual, which we developed alongside the practice framework, we are still rolling out ‘module style’ teachings.

These break down each practice approach in a more focused manner, and allow for continuous education to members of the East Kootenay Primary Care Network (including doctors) and within the East Kootenay Health Region.

We are reaching all new hires, and are working closely with clinics and hospitals throughout our homelands to provide meaningful educational opportunities and culturally safe spaces that assist us in determining what service delivery looks like for our members and citizens.

Our accredited training (which was in development at this time last year) has been a resounding success.

The training entails a ‘patient journey’ through the emergency department.

It takes into consideration colonial impacts, incorporates Indigenous values, and articulates some practice-changing ideas to support providers in ensuring they are cognizant of their ability to create culturally safe environments when supporting our people.

Visits to Creston, Fernie, Invermere, Golden, Cranbrook, and Kelowna are already underway, with the final stop happening October, 2024. Accreditation is valid for one year commencing September 2023, and more trainings are currently being developed to strengthen our ability to deliver meaningful educational opportunities for years to come.

The external reach and impact is an opportunity to educate those around us who work closely with our people.

The internal work is equally as important, as we provide similar avenues for education and training with our local communities, local organizations, and staff at the Ktunaxa Nation Council building.

We relish the opportunity to support our own, and look forward to continuing to roll out the practice framework in ways that impact and benefit future generations.
