In memory of Beatrice Stevens

From the Traditional Knowledge and Language team

Today, we mourn the passing of our friend and Elder, Beatrice Stevens.

Bea was a driving force and a steadfast presence in all areas of our work. She carried our teachings with deep care and shared them with generosity, always grounding her guidance in the wisdom of those who came before her. Whether she was teaching language or traditional practices, she did so with purpose and a commitment to doing things the right way.

Many of us were fortunate to learn from Bea. She was a trusted advisor whose direct approach challenged us to do our best and to do things properly. She reminded us that meaningful work requires dedication and perseverance. We remember her sharing the hide teachings passed down from her mother, encouraging us to try again and again until the work was right. Through those lessons, she taught us far more than technique, she taught us responsibility and pride in doing things well.

Bea shared her knowledge openly while always honouring those who taught her. Often, after explaining a word or phrase, she would remind us, “That’s what was taught to me.” In doing so, she demonstrated respect for the history of knowledge and the importance of carrying teachings forward. She helped us understand the richness of our language, reminding us that there is often more than one way to express a thought and that language lives through the many voices and perspectives of our people.

Bea’s impact reaches far beyond all she taught. We will miss her voice, her wisdom, her humor, and her unwavering commitment to our community. We will miss the way she leaned in whenever there was work to be done, offering her time, her knowledge, and her grit.

Her teachings will continue to guide us. Her words will continue to echo through our language. Her example will continue to inspire us to carry our culture forward with care, respect, and determination.

Our deepest condolences to her family and loved ones.
