Ktunaxa Participants: 12.
Salmon Warriors in attendance: David Manuel, Andre Nicholas and Dawn Scout (Indigenous Knowledge Coordinator).
On this day of harvesting, Andre Nicholas, David Manuel and Dawn joined many other participants with Roberta Gravelle leading the way in harvesting devils club.
Everyone met in Fernie at the gates of Island Lake Lodge and then convoyed up the road to a parking area.
They began with eating lunch and organized the tools for harvesting then they made their way onto the trails.
Everyone gathered around Roberta as she showed them what devils club was and how to harvest it as well as putting part of the devil’s club back into the ground; then they began to harvest.
They all gathered back up after harvesting and Roberta showed everyone what to do with the devil’s club after harvesting it.
They learned that you can make beads, teas and oils out of devil’s club and how they are medicines.
Everyone thoroughly enjoyed getting to go and participate in harvesting devils club.
Going out on the land getting to learn and connecting with everyone helps us stay grounded in the work they are doing in the CRSRI.
